30-Second Chair Stand Test
Count how many times you can stand fully up from a chair and sit back down in 30 seconds, arms crossed over your chest. Enter the number below to see how it compares for your age.

How to do the test
You’ll need a sturdy chair with no arms and a seat around 17 inches high — a dining chair is usually about right. Push it against a wall so it can’t slide.
- Sit in the middle of the chair, back straight, feet flat on the floor about shoulder-width apart.
- Cross your arms over your chest, hands resting on the opposite shoulders. They stay there the whole time.
- Start a 30-second timer, then stand all the way up and sit all the way back down, as many times as you can.
- Count only complete stands. If you’re more than halfway up when time runs out, count that one.
- Stop early if you feel dizzy, unsteady, or any chest discomfort.
Have someone nearby the first time. Not to help you up — just to be there.
If you can’t do it without pushing off with your hands, that’s a real result and the calculator handles it. Tick the box. In the standard scoring, needing your arms counts as a score of zero, because the test is asking what your legs can do unassisted. It’s also one of the most improvable findings in fall prevention, so it’s worth knowing.
What the test is measuring
Getting out of a chair is the single most repeated strength demand of an ordinary day.
You do it dozens of times without thinking, and when it starts getting hard, people adapt so gradually they never notice — pushing off the armrests, rocking forward for momentum, choosing the higher chair.
That’s why this test is useful. It puts a number on something that otherwise hides.
It’s also measuring something different from walking speed.
Someone can walk at a perfectly respectable pace and still struggle to rise from a chair, because walking is largely endurance and coordination while standing up is power.

How your score is interpreted
The calculator compares your result against reference values for your age and sex. These come from the CDC’s STEADI materials, which draw on normative data collected from more than 7,000 community-dwelling adults aged 60 to 94.
A score below the reference value for your group is classed as below average, and the CDC treats that as an indicator of increased fall risk.
One honest caveat, the same one that applies to any single measurement: it’s a screen, not a diagnosis.
Plenty of people score below the line and never fall; plenty score above it and do. What a low score reliably tells you is that lower-body strength deserves attention — not what will happen to you.
What to do with a low score
The good news about this particular test is that it measures the most trainable thing on the list.
Lower-body strength responds to progressive resistance work more reliably than balance responds to balance work, and faster than gait speed responds to anything.
If you scored below the line, or needed your hands: bring the number to your doctor or physical therapist and ask about a strength program. An objective score is far more useful to them than “my legs feel weaker than they used to.”
If you want to work on it yourself, the chair itself is the exercise. Sit-to-stands, done as a set with good form, are the movement — and if you can’t yet do them without hands, raising the seat with a firm cushion makes the movement possible while you build up.

When not to do this test
Skip it, or do it with a professional present, if you have had a recent hip or knee replacement, a recent fall you haven’t been evaluated for, chest pain or shortness of breath on exertion, or if you can’t stand up from a chair safely even with your hands.
